Blogga friends 4 eva

Today I met the uber cool and stylish Nakkiah from the new blog Hip Apocalyptic which you all should check out cos its great. She hails from Sydney but is down in Melbourne for the week so I showed her around the city, shopping all day and trying on way too expensive, but so cool dresses at Alpha 60.

I love her gladiator sandals and leather jacket.

Her Melbourne based boyfriend is so cute hey? Henry wants his jacket.

What I wore:
Dress: Thrifted from Savers $7
Leggings: Thrifted from Kinji, Harajuku, Tokyo $7
Belt: Thrifted from Camberwell Market $10
Necklace: Kinki Gerlinki $32
Jacket: Target $60
Moccasin sandals: Target $24
Studded bag: Thrifted from Savers $4

I didn't tell you guys but last Friday I went to Petrova from Project Runway's shop Lady's Spring launch. Anyway Petrova came up to me and knew my name and had read my blog post about loving her on the show. So cool when people I love and respect read this blog. The photos from that event will be on Melbourne Street Fashion.com ASAP, as soon as they go up I'll let you know because Petrova looks AMAZING!

Lazy Sunday

Anyone noticing a trend here? This weekend has been particularly nice, the weather has been fab and my company even more so.

Today I didn't wake up in time for Camberwell Market but all was not lost as there was a fab vintage fair on at the Carlton Club in the city from 1-7 (so its still on if you read this and have time to head on down). There were lots of amazingly dressed people. and awesome vintage finds all in this great pub meaning you could drink and shop! (not a good idea for me, last time I drank and shopped I bought so much crap, ahhhh)

I love the palm trees on the balcony at the Carlton Club. This place has had such a transformation. It used to be the dingiest 24 hour pub that people straight from jail would frequent. I used to go even back then (scary = cool?) but now it is so cool, and safe! I love the interior with the taxidermy animals and wallpaper and the outdoor areas are tres chic.

My friend bought this cute doll as a boyfriend for her Blythe doll. He is so kawaii ne?

What I bought:

This is all I bought at the market. A $4 cheese badge. I'm trying to save for my Tokyo trip remember, but it was really hard to not buy stuff, I loved heaps and heaps of dresses.

I did buy 2 dresses at Cotton On though (before going to the market, oops) They were only $15 each down from $44.95 (bargain!) and are the 1st "new" dresses I have bought in ages and ages so really they are worth it. Both are perfect Summer dresses too, super light weight and comfortable.

Dress: Cotton On $15
Necklace: Arthur Daileys $2
Leggings: Thrifted at Kinji in Harajuku, Tokyo $7
Shoes: I Love Billy $65

Dress: Cotton On $15
Badge: Thrifted from Carlton Club Vintage Fair $4
Leggings: Thrifted at Kinji in Harajuku, Tokyo $7
Plastic Jelly shoes: Thrifted from Savers $2
WOW a $28 outfit

Lazy Saturday

I am falling love with Melbourne again (finally) and I'm starting to enjoy the lovely cafes and boutiques that I used to love pre Tokyo. I don't know why it took me so long but it did, at least I am finally there. I'm going to document this process of falling in love with the city here on my blog. Today was spent at this cafe at the GPO eating chocolate brownies and drinking coke (coffee for Henry) and then wondering around window shopping. Tomorrow I am going to Camberwell market and meeting up with a friend. Life is good, the sun is out and I feel really happy. It was a perfect lazy Saturday.

I need a new professional(ish) camera

and I have no idea where to start. There are just so many options. I can't afford a real professional camera, my limit would be $1500 but ideally below $1000.

I currently have a Fuji Finepix S5600, which at the time of purchase (2006) was state of the art and expensive, but is now terribly out dated because it is only 5 megapixels. I'm starting to feel it lets me down on image quality on occasions and I need a stronger flash for night shots (a giant professional flash thing is defiantly needed for taking street photos at events) plus some different lenses would be good too. I wish I knew more about the technology and who makes the best lenses and what not but all my photography education was with film camera's and I kinda didn't pay attention to the techy stuff...oops.

I bought this Sony Cybershot which is 7.2 megapixles back in April and I am reasonably happy with it, there are a few things that annoy me about it (it takes forever to upload the photos to a computer, longer than any digital camera I have ever had before) but mostly it is fine and takes great photos. I don't use this when I'm doing street photos though as it doesn't look professional at all but its great if I do see someone cool when I'm out shopping or something.

So I am kinda torn between getting a new professional camera or going to Tokyo in January. I am leaning towards going to Tokyo and getting a new camera some time next year, but I'm not sure if I can wait that long I really want to start taking amazing photos now.

If anyone has any info about cameras or any tips that would be great. Camera's are cheaper in Japan so I might just buy one over there if I save up enough spending money in time and find which one I am after...but I am worried about the warranty being for in Japan only and the instruction book in Japanese.

Recent buys

Can I just thank everyone for being so lovely about my recent fashion shoot. There have been some possibly exciting new developments that I can't talk about just yet but watch this space for more info soon, so I just want to say thanks for all your support.

Also it is so hard to get dressed into your clothes once a model has worn them, she just looked better in everything. Oh well I work it in a different way.

So yeah I went to Savers in Footscray yesterday and this is what I bought.

A black studded bag for $4. It had ugly purple studs on it too but I removed them and you can't really tell.

A strange tie dye scarf that I'm not sure what to do with for $6. There is enough fabric to make a dress so maybe (maybe) I will do that.

Today I went to Target with my sister and I bought

The most amazing fringed gladiator sandals ever for only $24 down from $30. So cool. I already got 3 compliments on them when I was at this art opening tonight (all by men by the way) so I love them.

It looks like my sister is coming with me to Tokyo which is exciting. It will be her first trip overseas so it will be good for her to come with me and get a taste for what travel is like. I can't wait to show her everything and introduce her to my friends. So exciting. It will also be good to spend the time with my sister like that because really we haven't been together for that long a time since I was 16 so it will probably bring us closer, but also cause some fights.

Never mind the mess

My fashion shoot from today. Photos and Styling by me. Click on the pics to enlarge. The model is my Russian friend Anna from Uni, isn't she totally AMAZING? The location is my friend Tony's filthy smelly apartment (like we had to shove so much rubbish out of shot, pizza boxes, pringle cans, clothes, dirty plates. His place is so perfect for this type of shoot though and he was so nice to let me do it, he knows his place is filthy, he is proud of it, its kinda like his art, lol) It was so much fun doing this shoot, thanks so much Tony and Anna.

What do you guys think? Will I make a good stylist? Will these look good in my folio?

Fashion Shoot mood board

I know it is pretty obvious to do a grungey shoot but I have limited time so I can't source new clothes, just what I've already got and collected.

In other news when did aeroplane tax become so expensive? I have been hunting down bargain flights to Tokyo and the tax is about $700. Last time I flew to Tokyo I paid only $300 in tax (the last time being May 2007 to Tokyo and back here in August 2007) It looks like Jetstar is my only hope of getting there for $1000ish but they are booked up till January 16. OH well I will be able to stay there for 1 month still, only just not as soon as I would like. But Yay I can't wait to see everyone and eat some yummy Japanese food, take loads of photos, do some shopping (I will have more time to save now so that is a plus, more money for shopping is never a bad thing) and most importantly party. Yay. I am already thinking about what to pack, lol, but I'm like that.

Peace out

Flower Power

Dress: Thrifted from Savers $9
Studded Belt: Target mens section $19
Leggings: Thrifted from Kinji in Harajuku, Tokyo, $7
Studded Gladiator Sandals: BigW $19
Peace Necklace: Paris Kids in Harajuku Tokyo $3.15
Headband: Arthur Daileys $1

I have been making my folio for my interview all day, with a quick nip out to enjoy the lovely sunshine at a local outdoor cafe for lunch. I am so stressed right now about my folio though, I can't find so much of my old work what the heck did I do with it all?

Peace, Love and Rock N Roll

Oops (warning long ranty post below)

I shrunk my favourite dress in the wash. It is now more like a t-shirt less like a dress. Who knew that this could happen even to 2nd hand items from Savers that I would assume would have been washed many times before. I am totally bummed about this, if only I could turn back time and press the cold button on the machine. Damn.

I also now have my model for the shoot I need to do for my folio. I just want to clarify that I'm not going to be studying fashion design, I will be studying fashion styling and creative direction. It includes interior styling, event management and even food styling. We learn all about photo shoots, photography, mood boards and so much more. I have always seen myself as more of a stylist rather than a designer, whenever I design clothes I always feel that they aren't very original, but when I style outfits I think that is when I excel. I must say that I don't personally wear all of my crazy ideas, maybe due to my size, because it just won't look good on me, but I do have loads of ideas. Oh by the way remember that diet I was on? Well I still don't eat McDonalds anymore so I am back to being a good vegetarian, but I haven't really been working on it since the drama of my life took over again, but I really want to work on it again so by writing that here hopefully I will get motivated again.

Anyway this course really does seem perfect for me, it is the only one like it in Melbourne, and all of my work when I was at art school was about fashion styling in a way, I guess I have been waiting to find a course just like it since I left highschool (6 years ago, eeep what the heck have I achieved? Ahhhh life is so messy, I thought by now I would have some kind of career instead I am still working on getting there, slowly but surely)

I have my interview for the Uni in the next 2 weeks so wish me luck. I better stop talking like I am in, it's not guaranteed yet but I have a good feeling about it and I can't help planning my life around the change, I always do that, plan way ahead.

In happy news it looks like I'll go to Tokyo in December for 2-3 months so it doesn't matter that I'm not going to Korea on exchange anymore I can still visit Tokyo, and for longer. I just need to save up the price of the flight and maybe $1000 or more and I can go (Tokyo is cheap for me, staying at friends places, eating at conbini's for $1 (conbini means convenience stores...but in Japan they have healthy cheap salads, onigiri, soba for less than $3) free entry into clubs. I won't be able to shop but I'm going more to see friends and take some photos of people on the street so yay)

Even more happy news is that by not going to Korea I will be here when my bestest friend in the whole world is here for 1 month in March. I haven't seen her since 2003 (woah I can't believe it has been that long) We have been friends since grade 3 in Primary school when her parents moved to Australia from Scotland for their work (she is Scottish) They were here for 1 year and then went back home. Then they moved back to Australia when we were in year 7 at highschool until we were in year 9 at highschool. After that she came back for a few months the following year without her parents and then I visited her in Scotland for 3 weeks when I was in year 11. Then she came back for 6 months in my 1st year of Uni in 2003 and that is the last time I saw her. I really can't believe it was that long ago...woah. Anyway I have been looking forward to her coming back for ages and ages, it was meant to be this November but its been pushed back to March next year which when I found out made me cry, I was totally considering not going on exchange just to be able to see her for that month, well now it seems to have all worked out because I'm doing this other new plan so YAY (well if I do get into that course, see I can't help it I keep making plans like I am already in). Even better news is she will be staying with me for that whole time so its going to be so much fun! (I need to buy a blow up mattress, one that Hachiko can't break) Even with all these absences when we are together it is like we were never apart, she is that type of friend. We are total opposites too by the way, she is a med student (the reason she is coming to Australia is for some Internship at a hospital here) and kinda not arty but she gets me and I get her. I can't wait till she is here. Last time she was here I was so different, I was 19 and not into partying and kinda in between homes so living at Henry's parents house, I was totally not cool. Oh and I was in a wheelchair for the 1st month of her time here in Aus due to a broken left leg and injured right knee ligament so I was no fun, I was on loads of pain killers and couldn't go anywhere except the Casino which is pretty much the only wheelchair friendly venue in the city, it really opened up my eyes about those issues, footpaths are terrible and they broke the small wheels of the wheelchair all the time, we went through 4 rental chairs in a month! Anyway the last week she was here I moved into this amazing sharehouse in Fitzroy and made all these new friends and started partying and started to be cool again, so I want to show her how different I am now, lol.

Ok so yeah sorry about the ranty post and the over use of brackets, just needed to clear my head. I guess I use this blog as a personal diary not just as a fashion diary so I'm sorry if its boring, fashion posts will resume tomorrow, hopefully with some new outfits (I'm so bad at doing outfits regularly)

Project Runway Australia

Guess who I had dinner with tonight? Oren Nuri from Project Runway Australia!!!

It was so crazy. I was at this fashion event at the uber hip boutique Alice Euphemia for the launch of Romance was Born's Spring/Summer 09 collection taking photos for Melbourne Street Fashion.com. I love Romance was Born, they totally remind me of Mercibeaucoup my favourite Japanese label. Well I took a photo of Anna Plunkett who is the designer for the label, the other designer Luke Sales was also there but our other photographer took a photo of him. Anyway the party was amazing, I didn't think the night could get any better, but it did of course! Walking to dinner after the opening me and my sister stopped into EB Games to play some playstation games (I have no idea why we did that btw, I hate games) anyway from the corner of my eye I see Oren walk past, so I'm like to my sister "Oh my god that guy from Project Runway just walked past" and she was like "Huh, but I just killed that monster...but Oh my god lets go" so we ran after him and stopped him at the traffic lights. My sister got there 1st so she goes "Hey are you from project runway?" and he is like "yeah...why" so my sister tells him that I work for Melbourne Street Fashion.com and can she take your photo. He is so nice about it. Anyway we got to talking and it seems that he is down from Sydney and trying to find some good cheap Asian food in the city, so seeing as that's where we are heading we take him there. Turns out even though the show was filmed in Melbourne he never got the chance to explore the city before because they were in lock down during the shoot. Anyway we end up hanging out for a while and he tells us all the secret going ons of the show, which sorry, are secret, but woah there is so much you don't know from just watching. It was so much fun and hopefully we will see him again, he wants me to meet Lui. Yay! I love Lui.

Photos from the party:

Hello woollen necklace I love you and one day you will be mine xoxo

Photos of the amazing street style at the event will be on Melbourne Street Fashion.com any minute now. Check it out!

This was my 2nd Project Runway experience in as many days by the way. Yesterday I had a tour of the Whitehouse Institute of Design (where they film the show and where I will be studying next year hopefully) and I got to see the Project Runway sewing room, Tresume Hair Salon, Loreal Make up room and the Myer Accessories wall. So exciting. I love the facilities at the campus, it is amazing. I'm not just excited because of the Project Runway thing either, I have wanted to go to this Uni for a long time but it only just became non full fee paying so I can finally afford to be able to go. Yay.

Fashion Hayley has a shop now

I just discovered Red Bubble and I think it is better than Etsy for my work because they do all the printing and posting, I just have to upload the photos of my artworks and then anyone can buy them, how easy is that?

Please visit the Fashion Hayley Shop and tell me what you think. Has anyone heard of this site? I think the idea is really good but I'm not really sure if anyone uses this site.

I'm just doing this for a bit of fun to see what happens. I need to find all of my good photos and artworks so it will slowly grow over time.

I am thinking about what t-shirt designs to do too (the t-shirts are all printed on American Apparel tees, how cool is that!) Would anyone wear a Tokyo street fashion t-shirt? Or a Hello Hayley one? (Pictured below is my character Hello Hayley from an art project I did a few years ago)

UPDATE: My first t-shirt design!

My Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Favourites

I finally edited all of my photos for Melbourne Street Fashion.com and I wanted to share with you my favourite looks from the week. I know I'm a bit late with it all but believe me I have been busy! You have to check out all the looks on the site because there are so many it was hard to choose favourites.

Kaleidescape at Melbourne Town Hall Presented by Marie Claire magazine.

Anna Thomas
I am always partial to a good stripped t-shirt, I could wear this on holiday in Tahiti, its so nautical.

Ginger & Smart
The model I met! (The face of Spring Fashion Week!)
I love the native American styling. Its a shame you can't see the shoes, stupid flowers on the runway, but they were amazing gladiator sandals.

Ginger & Smart
I love Hammer Pants but don't have the figure for them, but I love this look.

Gorman
I am totally feeling the sk-pant look for Spring (Skirt + Pants)

Gorman
Another great sk-pant. I love the print of the fabric on the dress.

RAW Sustainable Fashion Parade at Fix Docklands

This parade was impossible to photograph, the models never looked at the photographers and they moved so much most photos ended up blurry, lots of the photographers around me were complaining. Its a shame because some of the clothes were amazing.

Fourth Daughter
This dress is beautiful, I would style it differently however.

Ruby Red Dress
A vintage jumpsuit plus kimono jacket = love

RMIT Bachelor of Fashion Design Final Year Student Parade - Mixed Tape Side A and Side B

This was THE BEST SHOW OF THE WEEK by far, so imaginative and creative.

Rachael Kroussoratis
I could see this look on one of the Spank girls in Tokyo

Rachael Kroussoratis

Eloise Warburton
I loved this collection for "larger women". It didn't hide anything but showed that you can be proud of your curves. Wearing a cupcake necklace is cute too but I'm not sure is that is a little too proud of your curves? This is another look I could see in Tokyo.

Sarah Macdonnell
The shoes and stockings are so Rodarte don't you think? I loved this look because of the woollen neckline/necklace?, as you know I am interested in woollen accessories and big bold necklaces made out of wool. The neckline reminded me a little of Mercibeacoup the Japanese label.

Alicia Gramsbergen
Wow, I love this. It's kinda Anime but not.

Courtenay Tyrrell
I love this photo. The lights were off because the leggings glow in the dark. I like how the photo looks like 90's hippy trippy art, it just needs a moon and a unicorn in there.

Michelle Czech
This is the winning collection. I think it definitely deserved to win, the collection works so well together. I love the unusual fabric and what she has done with it. The prize for winning was the chance to design the metlink uniform...great prize? I think she got money as well which is great.

Be sure to check out all the fab fashion from Melbourne Spring Fashion Week at
