That's a bit bright love

I've been wearing this dress a lot since it arrived in the mail last week as evidenced in my instagram feed. When it was released in ASOS Curve I ummed and ahhed about getting it as ASOS Curve is often too big for me. In the end I decided to give it a whirl as the style was an oversized cut and I could always send it back if it didn't work. Of course the next day after I ordered it a dress in the same print was released in ASOS's main collection but I actually wasn't too bummed as I prefer the cut of this one, its more square. When it finally arrived I was beyond happy with my choice, it fit perfectly. It just goes to show you the size on the label doesn't matter, its about making the piece work for you! In my last outfit post I wore a size 12 pencil skirt and in this post I'm wearing a size 20 dress. The dress is just so bright and happy it makes me feel good the whole day I wear it. I did have a tradie come up to me wearing his neon yellow high vis vest to tell me 'that's a bit bright love', which was rather ironic considering. High visibility aside this is what I wore to Penthouse Mouse's launch last Friday night.

This is my new Symantha Rose necklace that I mentioned in my last post. Someone said her pieces look like those killer python gummy lollies you find at 7-11 and I agree. They have an almost child like sense to them, the colours are so vibrant and fun and I love that the jewellery changes colours in different lighting.


I am onto my second faux fur pink tail, this one was found on ebay. My first one tore into three pieces thanks to some overzealous airport security guards, and sadly this one only lasted the night before tearing away from its hook. Hopefully I can repair it because I love the ridiculousness of wearing a giant faux fur pink tail.


Another sob story, these shoes are completely ruined now thanks to packing them in my suitcase right next to a black belt which somehow stained the plastic. I've tried everything to clean them.

Penthouse Mouse 2013

Every year I look forward to Penthouse Mouse like a kid in the lead up to Christmas Day, counting down the days, planning my outfit and thinking there is no way they can possibly top the previous year. Well every year it somehow does, getting bigger and better with age, like a fine wine. It's an event like no other in Australia, nothing comes close to replicating the diverse mix of artists, designers and performers that show in a new abandoned warehouse space each year. I keep thinking, surely they would have run out of abandoned warehouses in Melbourne's inner city by now? But no, every year a new space is found and altered by the team at Moth Design and then handed over to the artists to do their thing. It was a great homecoming for myself and Henry as if you follow me on social media you should know by now the exciting news, that we are Melbournians once more!!! I have no regrets about living in Sydney and I will miss many aspects of our life there - our new friends, favourite local cafe's and bars and our awesome neighbourhood, but it never felt like home. We needed to have the time away from Melbourne to come home and really appreciate this great city, before we left we were jaded and had lost our passion but we are returning re-energised with love for this vibrant city and Penthouse Mouse was the perfect first outing upon our return.

The beautiful Symantha Rose with her eponymous jewellery collection. I was wearing a piece by her on the night which I am yet to blog but will soon when I share what I wore to PHM13.


Pleast note the cat bag. This is a big trend in Harajuku right now with Osaka based designer Muchacha Ahcahcum first releasing an emook (which is a catalogue magazine with accessories found at all newsagents and book stores for about $20) with a two piece cat face purse and bag collection in 2012. Her bags normally sell for over $200 so the emook sold out fast and this year a second cat face bag emook was released increasing the number of street style shots of girls with cat bags in Harajuku by about 100%. Its that popular. So its interesting to see it catching on here in Melbourne so fast with lots of party goers sporting cat face bags. Also interesting that I haven't seen cat bags in Sydney.


Symantha's collection of bright resin jewellery, I already own two pieces and after seeing this display I wanted everything.

Jia Jia Ji Chen and Sophie Moorhouse Morris's Fairy Floss installation. You could stir up your own stick and chomp away while drinking the free Sapporo beers and checking out the exhibition - bliss.


Nixi Killick graduated from RMIT fashion last year with one of my favourite collections and its all happening for her right now. Up for the iD International Emerging Designer Awards in New Zealand and a feature in The Age newspaper over the weekend Nixi is a young creative to watch.

Art Money is collaboration between Melbourne based artists Darcey Bella Arnold and Jake Anthony Collins. They have a great Tumblr you should follow where they pull apart pop culture, consumerism, fashion, technology and digital media. I went to high school then art school with Darcey so its awesome to where her work takes her. That's one of the awesome things about being home that you don't realise you miss until you're back - the history you have with people.

Artist/designer/stylist/performer James Todrov is Melbourne's next Leigh Bowery...which if you didn't know is where Leigh Bowery is actually from, he dropped out of RMIT fashion and escaped to London and the rest is history.

PHM Midmouse

Penthouse Mouse Midmouse Runway is always a stand out show for me on the LMFF calendar. Showcasing new, young and independent designers Midmouse is always chock full of inspirational and innovative fashion, and this year the designers went above and beyond, so much so that I had tears of joy by the end of the night.

SHOW 1

Leonard Street
A very Melbourne label, in a similar vein to Gorman with its focus on prints with a vintage, girly aesthetic.







Autonomy
Focus on on-trend menswear, definitely something I can imagine Henry wearing.








The Social Studio
Fashion with a difference. The Social Studio is a great Melbourne initiative which helps recent refugee's learn skills and start a label with an environmental conscience.






Kings of Carnaby
Sort of had a mod London vibe with a punky twist.

Casual, basic, classic.






Upper Left Arm
Upper Left Arm continue to out do themselves with every new collection. Their fun printed knits and quirky men and womens wear has a cult following in Melbourne. I love the styling of their show, the banana pom pom sticks were a fun thing to see walking down the runway.

Above continue to focus on great outerwear with interesting design elements like cut outs, pocket scarves and layering of materials/texture.

Peplum's done well.




Neo Dia
One to watch in Melbourne. Focus on unusual shapes and textures, almost like origami. Amazing colour palette this season, I love all the cropped jumpers and sheer.












Trimapee
Introduced a red, black and white print this season. Androgynous, Melbourne, dark and edgy.






DI$COUNT
What can I say about DI$COUNT other than it was FUCKING AMAZING!!! Nadia and Cami had the audience screaming and chanting "Discount, Discount, Discount" in anticipation before the first model even came out, and once she did the cheering just got louder. This is when I cried, tears of pure joy. This is what fashion is all about to me, not trends, not commerciability, not classic and timeless pieces, not the LBD but pure creativity, pure genius, pure passion and love. Every piece was crazier than the next, so detailed, so bold, so colourful. You can compare their work to the work of the late Leigh Bowery (himself an ex RMIT student) but that would do them a disservice as what they have created is pure DI$COUNT. With its cult following in Melbourne, great online presence and having already been worn by MIA, Britney Spears in music videos DI$COUNT are set to take over the world, mark my words. I freaking LOVE them so much and am beyond proud and happy for them.

As you can see Melbourne put on another great show of unique and interesting personal style. I have only taken photos of .5% of the amazingness that was out that night. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you just don't see this level of creativity with personal style in Sydney, Tokyo doesn't even compare on some levels. Ahhh Melbourne you make it so difficult to leave you.
