Blogging along

It seems me pushing Pom Poms is wearing thin so I am blogging today to ask you something I have wanted to ask for a while:

What should I post more of?

What should I post less of?

Why do you read my blog?

During fashion week I met a few readers (thanks for saying hi, sorry I was couldn't chat for long) and it got me thinking. If I supposedly have so many readers why do I always have so few comments? I also seem to have lost about 100 readers per day. Why? What did I do wrong? Too many Pom Pom posts or not enough outfit posts?

Thank guys

  1. Hi Hayley, I read your blog in a reader (which is maybe why my page visits don't show up?). I'm lazy and don't comment as much as I should, but I love reading your blog and have since you were in Japan! I'm so impressed and proud that you've come so far since then with all things fashion (your study, the website, everyone recognising you etc). I love the photos but I also love reading about things, small or big events, so I guess I don't have much advice really because I like what you're doing. xx

  2. I read your blog because quality Aus fashion blogs are hard to find and I really like at least 90% of your posts. Those that don't really appeal to me are specifically Melb/Tokyo-centric because I don't live in Melb and I've never been to Japan. I really like article-type posts that you used to post a lot more of.

Probably the main reasons that I dig your blog is for your awesome personal style and the confidence to rock the outfits you do. You definitely know what you're doing And you're not one of those cutesy size 8s that can look good in anything -- your blog, personal style and take on the fashion world is definitely one of a kind. Also, your e-persona has never come across as snobby, hot shit or above everyone else which is the vibe I get from so many bloggers and ugh, I hate that.

I'd like to see more posts about cheap, acessible, Australia wide (so, chainstore stuff probably) fashion buys. Also DIY ideas, interior design ideas and general fashion articles as opposed to party snaps etc.

  3. Hi Hayley,

Like Sharnee I read your blog on RSS, and don't often click through to comment.

What I like about it is that fashion blogging can be so pretentious and label-obsessed but I like the way you don't just lust after the latest haute couture but find your own ways to get looks you like, and are always pleased to show off bargains!

  4. Hi Hayley!
You've inspired me so much, I'm actually making a skirt trimmed with pompoms, I'm sure you're quite pround.
I think what you're doing now is fantastic. Maybe more DIY projects?? Hope I helped :)

  5. hayley i think your blog is just great. the pom poms are fantastic! i like your blog because yeah, its not pretentious at all and you just sound like a normal down to earth girl who is enthusiastic about fashion, and i love that!

all i would change is more of your own outfit posts but besides that its totally super dude! keep going!

  6. I gotta agree with the other comments, since the introduction of 'following,' google reader and bloglovin et al, I've noticed I may not necessarily click onto the blogs like I used to, and I've also lost readership as well.
So don't worry, it's not just you!

I read your blog because you are cool. It's as simple as that!
Let your pom poms rock on Hayley, like I said, you are ahead of the fashion pack in Melbs.

  8. i read your blog because i think you have a friggin interesting life!
i love reading about your travel stories. and i love seeing your personal style... and i find relevance in your melb centric posts.
i wish you still did street style shots for your blog... i miss those, even though they're on MSF now and your not allowed to put them on your blog.

btw. dw about comments. sometimes commenters get lazy or have...i dunno... hand problems.

  11. I'm the only person (maybe) still visiting blogs the old fashioned way (opening 60 tabs in firefox at once)!! But I usually don't comment on blogs if I feel I have nothing relevant to contribute or nothing I can explicitly identify with and agree/disagree/share my experience. But I pretty much check your blog everyday. I'd like more outfit posts xx

  12. So many questions today! Hehe.

I read your blog because I like checking out your style, which is kind of eclectic and crazy. So I guess I frequent your blog because it's different from a lot of others out there. Plus, I like your writing style, you seem very friendly!

I don't think I've commented before, because I'm kind of lazy, but I will try to more often!

Also, I don't think it is possible to have too many Pom Pom posts, I for one am thoroughly enjoying them.

  15. I suspect that people read blogs but are too lazy to post a comment. I mean in the world of internet surfing (akin to flicking channels on a tv) most people would click on sites and then not bother clicking a few boxes to comment (i'm like that all the time)

I like more outfit and house/homewares posts and tales of travel.

  17. Hey Hayley -

I read your blog in my reader - sorry I don't often make the jump over to comment - I'm just not very fashiony myself, while I love reading what you and others have to say, I dont feel that I can contribute to the conversation in much a useful or meaningful way and I loathe writing something like 'great post!' as it sounds terribly generic and without intention. I think you're doing great and won't be unsubscribing anytime soon.

  18. hay there I read your blog on Google reader which is why I don’t leave comments and might account for the apparent drop in readership.

The nature of you blog does seem to have changed since I started reading it, You have gotten busier and the entry have gotten slightly less interesting. I really liked the outfit posts seeing how you were putting things together and you own personal tweaks.

Another reason that I have been reading less of late is a impatient/crapy internet reason, some of you Japan entries were really slow to load because of the photos and I am super impatient.

But I’m not going anywhere on the whole I still enjoy the blog.

Ps I sent you an email that you seem to have ignored, if I was the sensitive type I would totally be in a sulk by now.

  20. I can't think of anything you should post more or less of - love the pom poms, they are fun. Love the Japan posts too.

I like reading because I'm not that interested in fashion - as in who is the latest designer some fashion editor is flogging - but do love seeing interesting outfits and how ppl put them together.

  21. Hayley,

I read your blog as a friend and outsider. I take tremendous interest in everything Tokyo, especially the cool shops and street fashion shots. I love the Melbourne Street fashion info too, and the DIY and thrift store (op shop?) finds are always REALLY interesting to me.

One thing being just a guy from Oklahoma that appreciates fashion, but isn't too obsessed with it or into high fashion, its interesting for me to observe styles of other major cities, and I also REALLY REALLY like learning about cool stores in other cities. I'd love to see more of what's really going on in Melbourne..because its hard for me to picture the shops and stuff without ever being there...The thing I probably like least but is still interesting is the party pics. Your blog is great and so inspiring for my art, especially when it involves Japan!!!

  22. Sharnee: Ahhh that makes sense, everyone has readers now (Ummmm I don't, is that crazy?) I love your blog too, love seeing the twins updates.

Lilac: Ok I hear you about how the blog is super Japan and Melbourne centric. I will try and post more national related stuff from now on (it is a bit tricky though, but I will try!!!)

Mel: These readers are evil I miss my comments *lol* But thanks for the positive feedback.

Angela: DIY projects on the way soon I hope. You are inspiring too, I love the stuff you make, talk about talent.

Mightyhawk: Ok more outfit posts to come, I have been very slack with those I know.

Lady Melbourne: Ok, phew, wipes forehead. I don't know why I never realised the reader thing before. And LM you are a style icon of Melbourne. I was sad I missed you all last week x

Polly: Thanks I will try to keep on blogging on

  23. A dreamer: lol at hand problems

    Holly: Thanks so much xxx

Tea: Inspiration posts are a good idea

Alicia: Ok more outfit posts to come. And your not alone, I am an old fashioned girl myself too. Maybe I should get a reader though, to save time?

Nadia: Glad your liking the pom poms, I just saw some new pom pom dresses from Japan fash week so more pom pom posts to come I'm sure.

Laurebev1991: Well I tool A LOT of photos at LMFF and they are all up at www.melbournestreetfashion.com (please note my photos from Runway 1 are terrible, I forgot to bring my zoom lens and I was positioned at the back of the press pit, ahhhhhhhh so annoying)

Yu: Tales of travel may be a bit difficult right now but I can do more outfit and home posts for sure.

    Anna: Thank you...I hope :>

Kate: Another reader person. Thanks for making the jump this time xxx

Chrinner: Hey, I hope I have rectified the email situation now but if not PLEASE re send the email. I do try and reply to all emails, but if it was sent in the last month what with being in Tokyo, then starting Uni the day I got back and a week later LMFF starting I just have been terrible with keeping track. I do apologise though.

Kathrynoh: Ok great to know, more outfit posts to come.

Hanner: Thanks, pom poms are here to stay!

Lactose: I know you love the Japan posts, just like I LOVE your japan posts. Got any new drawings?

***So I have learnt that people

    -Want more outfit posts
    -Want less party photos
    -Want less Japan/Melb centric posts
    -Want more Japan/Melb posts
-Want more bargain shopping and DIY's
    -Want more pom poms

Thanks everyone who commented, such a bit help

    Hayley xxx

  24. You really do not do enough photo posts.
I really do love seeing you post your outfits and house pictures.

I think i was a little lost when you went to Japan, it was lovely to see you having a fun time but the pictures of you hanging out really didnt mean that much to me.

The best part is seeing how you dress yourself everyday.

  25. Oh, I love the pom poms! I don't comment often, because I read all the blogs on Google Reader and just quickly go through everyone's posts.

ps i too don't use 'reader' and don't really like the idea of it..!!

  28. I'm not too sure how originally I came across your blog but when the 1st time I was going through it, what attracted me to you was your outfits, the fact that you take the risk to wear what you wear where not many people (especially girls) similar to your body shape to you would not feel as confident or comfortable wearing what you wear. I like the fact that you come across as confident in your approach to fashion. I would love to see more of your style photos and love the work you do on Melbourne Street Fashion.
By the way I love pom poms, I say the bigger the better they are (I’m a learner knitter myself)

  29. i read and like everything you do but i must say that i would prefer more 'you' stuff -your outfits, friends, home, travels and adventures- rather than fashion weeks and runway photos.
a few are ok, but in my mind those are generally more fashion-site content (style.com, or your very own melbourne street fashion etc) rather than content for a personal blog.
i never get many comments either, so when i do, i always say thanks with a reply on my visitor's blog. being polite and giving a response is always appreciated: its depressing when you comment on someone's blog and they never respond, especially if you read them regularly and feel close to them (without wanting to sound like a stalker lol!)
hope i helped with your queries x

  31. Hayley, I read your blog because I think you are a very talented person. You speak your mind and write it all in a very entertaining way - kind of how I imagine you would chat with your own personal friends. You are a great photographer too.

I especially love your styling - outfits, photography - even your apartment (I HAD to show those shots to Mr VV who was also very impressed).

Keep up your Melbourne/Japan/where ever the hell you happen to be posts. They are part of what makes you so unique.

P.S. I promise to post comments more often too!

    xx VV

  32. Hayley, I think you would receive more comments if anonymous commenting wanst disabled maybe?

I dont even know what the 'google reader' thing is? Im in Malaysia at the moment and I feel so out of the fashion loop!

I think more outfits and DIY's would be a good direction to with...but I also love your interior deisgn aesthetic's that you share with us.

  33. hey Hayley, I read everyone of your blogs. I follow your blog with the RSS thing that shows me if you updated or not and when there is a new post I click into your page if that makes sense:) i usually do leave comments but sometimes don't when im just really tired n like to use my right hand only to click (rather then click type click type) agree with others, commenters get lazy and a lot of ppl use different functions to follow blogs sooo its not precise to judge by no. of comments.

i personally like seeing your style/outfit photos, more street fashion, diy, and melb related posts seeing as i can relate to that one! :D keep up your awesome bloggggg x
