Wayne Cooper hates on fat people, well actually a fat person: ME!

The WC from EXERO HDTV on Vimeo.

Watch the video, I appear in the last scene.

I know this happened a while ago, back in the "dark ages", as in the time I spent without the internet at home, but I'm not sure how many of you saw it. I was alerted via a text message to it from Patty from Frockwriter, who had made a blog post about the story. I was out at the RMIT show at Melbourne Fashion Week at the time of getting the text saying I appeared in Wayne Cooper's TV shows pilot, and it wasn't very nice what was said about me. To say I was desperate to leave the parade and head back to my sisters house to watch it quick smart is an understatement. What had he said? What the hell was this all about?

It turns out Wayne isn't the one who actually says anything, it is his co-stars Tim Constantine and Elisabeth Shingleton. What they say as they apparently look towards me, talking about what I'm wearing is; “It’s magnificent - it’s like a cold glass of water after being out in the desert for years”.

As Frockwriter noted, it is snarky, and personally I think its rude of them to have used footage of me taken unbeknownst to me in this way.

Wayne Cooper is known in Australia for being "fatist", having said that Australian models are "porky" amongst other gaffes. He is also known as a wife beater, but that is a whole other story all together, or is it? Verbally bashing one women and physically another, is Wayne Cooper Australia's biggest misogynist?

  1. Grrr, this post made me angry. Wayne Cooper can get stuffed. I had no idea he was such a tool! Isn't it illegal to film people for broadcast without their permission? I love your blog and envy your ever impeccable style and your keen eye for fashion in all sizes and shapes!

  2. One thing I will never understand about your blog Hayley, is why you continue to support an industry that discriminates against anyone that doesn't have an eating disorder. It's very clear to most people that fashion big shots like Anna Wintour find anyone that is bigger than a size 4 repulsive, so honestly this is nothing new and the way things always will be unless someone influential actually tries to say something about it.

You, ironically, have a lot of influence on people in the fashion world and could be that someone that actually tries to instigate a change and yet you don't seem to care and are more than happy to fork over $10 a pop for magazines that encourage eating disorders and discrimination. If I had the influence you have in the fashion world the last thing I would be doing is bitching when designers discriminate while hypocritically leafing through magazines like Vogue and the like. I'm not saying any of this to be mean because I love your blog to bits, but feel that you could be doing so much more. I know I would be if I was in your shoes.I mean you actually get to speak to designers and people in the know but you never seem to raise this as an issue when ironically you have the ability to. Think about this as something to consider sometime.

  4. Saw this when Patty blogged about it and came about the same time when he stood up and was swearing in the middle of the Perth Fashion Show. Given his past and present behavior it makes me even angrier that he can even be given the opportunities to do what he does. He is trying to be relevant by causing controversies using people who actually are (like yourself). I say stuff him and let him continue being the least relevant 'fashion personality' he really is!

  5. What the hell was that even about? I got nothing out of that except Wayne Cooper thinks he's top shit and that he hangs around with people who are equally big wankers.

Hayley, you're awesome and should consider legal action. Being featured in something like this in this context could be ruinous to your career. I wouldn't stand for it!

  6. Harlow, don't you see, if I stopped trying to work in the industry then they win? And isn't this post doing what you are asking of me, trying to say something about it? I can't personally call up Wayne Cooper and ask him, hey what the fuck is this all about, but I can blog about it and it will hopefully get to him somehow. Also, I don't tend to buy Vogue, I prefer Frankie or Yen which feature mostly real people, and did you know Shop Till You Drop magazine has a plus size page in every issue. Anyway thanks for loving my blog xxx

I am amazed this was put up. What pair of fucking pricks.

  9. This video does not represet the fashion industry at all - it represents the clingers and the people who are in it for the wrong reasons. Most of the people in the fashion industry (the ones that work hard) are in it because we love fashion. We know we're not all perfect, but we love to create and see fantasies. We're in it not to make fun of people, but to embrace difference!

Wayne Cooper is a total joke and if it wasn't for his pitiful Myer contract we would forget his name entirely. This video, I'm assuming is supposed to be tougue-in-cheek and making fun of all the queens in the industry, but it just comes across as akward, not funny and at the end of the day just makes Wayne look like he thinks he's funny, when indeed he is not.

The fact that you are included in this means you are doing something right Hayley, and in a way you should be proud. You're just doing your thing and Wayne and his 'co-stars' are left looking like stupid bitchy school girls.

In conclusion, Wayne Cooper go back to making clothes or just dissapear entirely. Hayley, keep doing your thing!

  10. thank you for fighting the good, fashionable fight. when we give up, it only serves to maintain the status quo.

also, i can't get over the fact that his initials are WC. i'd try to downplay that if i were him.

also, sorry to hear about the family health issue. hope everything will be okay.

  11. If there were no discrimination against fat people in the fashion industry, then anyone one, regardless of size, would be able to work in it.

The only criteria for being/staying in the industry would be talent & hard work. You're clearly got talent & you do work hard, Hayley.

It must be personally pretty uncomfortable at times. But in my view, just by staying in the industry, you are continuing to challenge it, doing your bit to fight discrimination. I don't think you have to do more, unless you want to.

Avoiding the industry isn't necessarily going to force it to change. In my view, the best chance for change is if people work towards it both from within the industry (you), and outside it (Peta; Harlow Darling). And I don't see why you can't try and make a living doing that you're good at.

[A useful thinking exercise: should people of color just avoid industries where racial discrimination is prevalent? What if they're skilled at the work in those industries? Is segregation & ghettoisation the answer?]

Of course, I'll understand if you want to get out of the industry, if the personal toll is too much... look after yourself first!

  12. Harlow... Hayley IS doing JUST THAT. By continuing working in the fashion industry she is already challenging it. She should not be an anti-fashion activist. If she buys Vogue or whatever other magazine it is because regardless of SIZES she likes and supports fashion. Why are you suggesting she boycotts? Wouldn't that then make her a sizeist or whatever.

Hayley, keep doing what you're doing lady. All my love xoxo.

Fuck Wayne Cooper - fucking douche bag, always has been always will be. There's no helping him.

  13. Did you sign a release for them to air it? I'm assuming not since you didn't even know about it. Contact a lawyer and sue the arse off them.

  14. Who is Wayne Cooper? An Australia thing? Never heard of him. I read every single thing you post though and I think you're great!
I agree, what a bunch of dicks, but why do you care what people like that think anyway? You could even go all sunshine and bunnies and be flattered that they thought you interesting enough to snark on. Water is wet, the sky is blue and haters gonna hate. HATERS GONNA HATE.

  15. Hayley this show looks appalling! To be honest it was painful to watch. It goes to show how bad his core business is going if he has to make his own tv show. You are awesome and have every right to pave your own way in the fashion industry :) so sorry to hear about Henry's dad x

  17. I'm American so maybe that is why I do not at all know who Wayne Cooper is, but I do know who YOU are.

Although this is my first comment, I've been reading for awhile.

Keep positive in the great things you are doing and let jerks like him drown in their own negativity.

    xx

  18. thats really aweful of him ;(

Dont feel terrible though, if that was his best shot of comedy that i definitely think that he should stick to designing. And I actually really liked what you were wearing in the last shot, that floral dress is lovely!

And i have to be honest, i dont agree with a lot of the commentary above about the fashion industry hating on people who dont posess eating disorders,, because infact, the fashion industry promotes the epitome of a healthy body, however the means to which some girl achieve this is the disorder. And yes, obviously some models have eating disorders, but lots of people also have binge eating problems which is just as unhealthy.

And YOU are part of the fashion industry, and youre providing a really important message to girls of all shapes and sizes that it can be inclusive (as long as you ignore idiots like wayne cooper!).

And yeah, you should be awarded a medal for being a spokesperson for plus sized people!

  22. Grrrrr makes me hate Wayne Cooper even more now...stupid wife beater and fatist. And I agree with the others, that video was absolute rubbish it didn't even make sense! I think you're an awesome inspiration Haley.. fuck those C#@$8!

  23. You look fabulous Hayley. Being new to the Australian fashion scene I had no idea who Wayne Cooper is, but now I do- he's a douche and I certainly won't be buying any of his clothes.

Keep on inspiring. We need people like you as boring stick insects with no personality and arrogant egotists like Wayne Cooper aren't going to do it for us.

  24. Hayley, although I agree that he's a prick, is this really the most mature way to deal with it/get a response? Do a post calling him a wife beater? Rise above it.

  25. I feel a but dumb here, but I don't get how their comments were offensive? I thought that they were saying your Melbourne-esque aesthetic was refreshing to see in the middle of Sydney?!

Forgive me if I'm wrong - I've misinterpreted shit before. But I didn't think they were bagging you, I thought they were just being annoying!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey Patricia, it was actually filmed in Melbourne at LMFF and not in Sydney (I can recognise the background and when I wore the outfit). But yeah it was obviously meant to be snarky because of their tone and the nature of the rest of the program.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To be honest, I don't even understand what they are snarking about - they don't like your outfit? Your size? It's not very clear and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. And what's with their hammy acting? They're making people who work in the fashion industry look bad by acting like such unfunny idiots.
And I totally agree with the commenter that says 'This video does not represet the fashion industry at all - it represents the clingers and the people who are in it for the wrong reasons'. To me, anyway, they don't come across as relevant or clever, just pretentious assholes who are too taken up with admiring themselves to pay any attention to fashion at all.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What the actual f'ck?!?! I cannot believe this would actually be put into a show and used on television. First off, who the hell are they to critisise you, especially without you knowing you were used in the show, or even filmed at all. Second, (and I feel SO strongly about this) do they NOT realise that there are actual women, with you know, feelings, watching this?!? Women that might struggle so much with the way they look and here they go and completely ridicule somebody who could be such a great rolemodel for them, showing them that you don't have to be stick-thin to follow your dreams in the fashionworld. Seeing this literally makes me feel sick and so pissed off. We need to work towards all being accepted just the way we are, at whatever size and this pig of a man is doing the exact opposite. But trust me, if that man uses such horrible ways to create 'a good show', it won't work. People are never going to fall for that shit. But GOD what a pig. I hope karma comes to bite him in his ass.

p.s. I think it's great what you're doing Hayley, keep going, you're paving the way for other women and I deeply admire you for it!!

  30. Was that meant to be funny? Cleary Wayne Cooper's comedy is as good as his clothes.

  31. Wayne is a tool who makes "frocks" for brownlow night.

  32. This show is rubbish, all the people who appear in this are completely fake including Wayne Cooper himself. Why would you want employees like Tim and Elizabeth?

This show is a major embarassment for Wayne Cooper why would you even let this go to air - such bad PR.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Since you didn't sign a release, you should be able to sue for the use of your image (in the US I am fairly certain of this).

Also, if not for the context on your blog I would have assumed that this was a lame attempt at a fake reality show (like, they are trying to do a staged version of Rachael Zoe). The problem is they are not funny, and the main character is not charismatic. If he gets more than the pilot episode Australia must be really hurting for stuff to fill the airwaves.

  34. hay!! that is ridiculous.can't believe there are people that dumb able to function without help.. listening to the inane chatter from the two cronies sounding like a poor version of mean girls just made me incredulous. except they are suppose to be 2 adults working as professionals. They have clearly showen themselves up for the regressive idiots they are and in long term, it will be far more damaging to their own credability than it will have any effect on yours. You rock. Thems be sad sad idiots.

  35. What a load of shit. To me it seems like a wannabe, unfunny fashion version of Kath and Kim.

  36. I wouldn't read too much into it... they also made fun of Lara Bingle, KRudd etc...?

And she spoke of a 'black dress', but you were wearing a floral skirt!? Or am I missing something?

  37. that was desperate, rude and totally uncalled for.

  38. Oh honey,

Wayne is such a z list " designer" as if anyone besides the Today show and Sunrise gives a shit what he has to say. You are a beautiful, intelligent and stylin lady, it doesn't matter what size you are. These wannabe fashionista's create boring shit and are simply petrified of anything remotely edgy. Stay strong Hayley- they're aren't many out there who could take the knocks you get sometimes and stand back up.
