On The Streets Of Sydney.com

Photobucket
I can finally reveal my big secret project (well not so secret if you follow my tweets). For the last few months I have been working on www.onthestreetsofsydney.com, my new online magazine which aims to discover the bright new creative next big things right here in Sydney. The lovely logo was designed by Natalie Perkins, a very talented artist and blogger whose work I have admired for a long time. She perfectly met the rambling brief I sent her, taking my confused and wordy emails in her stride, and the result is beyond perfect. To say I love the logo is an understatement. The site itself was built by my good friend Alicia, from Sea of Ghosts, who at one point studied web design which is obvious when you look at her blog, its so well designed. Well she has outdone herself with On The Streets Of Sydney.com, its clean and simple, easy to navigate with all the design elements I requested...and then some.

Photobucket
Yes, On The Streets Of Sydney.com is going to have street photos, how could it not? I've been taking street photos since 2001, and I'm not about to stop now. I love the whole process of street photography, and so many people who I have photographed have gone on to become my friends, so what better way to meet people in a new city than to do this?

Photobucket
Not only will the site have street fashion photos, it will also have daily Monday to Friday original content. Be it an editorial shoot or a studio visit, we will be bringing you the best that Sydney has to offer in terms of style on a daily basis. Yes I did say we, I have an amazing team of people working on this with me, you can read all about them here. I'm so lucky that everyone who I have met or spoken to about this has been very positive. It seems Sydney was in need of a site like this, and I'm just so excited by having this way to showcase and find all the hidden pockets of creativity in Sydney. I'll be learning and discovering along the way too, how good is that?

If you like and comment on our facebook page before 5pm on the 10th of December you could win a $50 Alegorie voucher. Read more about the competition here.

I would like to thank everyone who made this all possible. First off I would like to thank you, my readers, who have made everything possible with your support from the start. Thanks for putting up with my absence these last few months, its been a bit hectic to say the least. Secondly I would like to thank Alicia and Natalie for working on the building and design of the site, you guys have perfectly realised my vision, thanks and you know I love you. To my team @ontheSOS (how cool is our twitter name btw?) thanks for all your hard work at pulling the content together, without you this wouldn't be possible. Lastly thanks to my husband for putting up with the stress, the constant mess of shoots and people streaming in and out of our home (my office) almost daily.

So what you waiting for? Check out On The Streets Of Sydney.com

Sydney is, like, so LA!

Photobucket
I was invited to the Tangent Magazine pool party at The Ivy and jumped at the chance to actually tick off one of the things I wanted to do before I die, that is attend a pool party at iconic Sydney venue, The Ivy. So glad I did, as even as tacky as the venue is, its tacky in such a fun way that you sorta forget the tack and have fun. Plus it was lovely to put a face to a name and meet Emmanuel and Heather, the creative forces behind the magazine.

Photobucket

Photobucket
I got to hang out with Emily from Little Black Book and her friend, also Emily, from Emerald Couture.

Photobucket
I met Anya from Oui Je Suis when I first moved up here, so it was great to see her again, I was very envious of her Chanel sunnies.

Photobucket
I brought along my new Sydney pal Chloe (she is working on a new project with me, more on that soon!) Chloe happens to be Jasmine from Gala Curios's sister, see you can see she is wearing one of her bow rings. With us in the stripe top with the Chanel broach is Phoenix, a fabulous young designer based in Sydney who is seriously going places (just check out his portfolio!).

Photobucket

Photobucket
I wore my Monif C fringed swimsuit I bought in NYC as a top with my City Chic fringed skirt, Drown necklace and Urban Outfitters wedges. Chloe was wearing Shakuhachi drop crouch trousers, Juicy Couture wedges and the most awesome Mimco bag ever!

Finally, the last of my New York snaps

Photobucket
I met up with some friends one night at The Jane hotel. Jade Arnott from Arnsdorf and her boyfriend from Andrew Portable.tv had moved to New York this year so it was great to catch up with them, and visiting friends fashion photographer Mia Mcdonald and her girlfriend Emma Freeman who is a director (she directed that recent channel 10 Bob Hawke biopic) also know them so it was the perfect opportunity to all hang out.

Photobucket
Also there was Phil Oh from Streetpeeper.com who I used to take street snaps for.

Photobucket
I got recognised by an old blogger (old as in she no longer blogs, but she works for Refinery29 now) which was cool and unexpected. I used to love her blog Pretty Legit sooooo much too.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Mandatory NYC photo, Times Square at night. Not as impressive visually as neon the lights of Shinjuku, but impressive none the less.

Photobucket
Ebony, from Make Believe, invited me to go with her friends to a music festival on Governors Island's man made beach. Here we are on the free ferry going across.

A glimpse of the Statue of Liberty while heading over to Governors Island

Hipster Paradise.

Photobucket
We had such a fun time.

Photobucket

Photobucket
The band we were all there to see was Caribou, who after attending I noticed being played in every cool shop I went to.

Photobucket
But these buskers were more entertaining. We danced here for an hour or so after getting back on Manhattan.

Photobucket

Photobucket
To get to Coney Island you can catch the N, Q or R trains, or in other words, the Not Quite Right trains....oh that made us laugh, and we soon realised it was an omen of what was to come.

Photobucket
Coney Island is just NQR. When the first thing that greats you once you are off the train is a crazy man with a snake around his neck then you know this isn't a place for you.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Yep, shoot a "Live Freak".

Photobucket
I got an email invitation to head down to this store, Eva on Bowery, which stocks an impressive line up of designers including Australia's own TV. I bought this awesome dress by Henrik Vibskov, which I'll show you soon.

I had to check out the Irregular Choice store, after falling in love with their online store, and it didn't disappoint. The labels kawaii aesthetic is plastered all over the walls in an over the top kitsch Japanese way that I will always love.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Love me some wedges, but didn't buy any :(

Photobucket
I bumped into Australian in New York Ms Fitz, a styling icon who is making it in the city that is impossible to crack. She looks hot in her Irregular Choice American flag heels.

Photobucket
I kept bumping into these fashion boys around town, so I just had to snap them, it was a sign from the street fashion gods.

Photobucket
Loving the double lip rings.

Photobucket

Photobucket
He makes all his and his friends jewellery, how freaking cool are they?

Williamsburg aka my fave part of NYC

Photobucket
Nicolette (middle) lives in the most fabulous NYC style loft in Williamsburg, exposed brick walls, dark floorboards and a galley kitchen, oh I was in love. This photo was taken on her rooftop with a view of Manhattan and the Williamsburg bridge. Sakina and I were in awe of the view.

Photobucket

Photobucket
5 Leaves, the Williamsburg establishment that was initially set up by the late Heath Ledger. It has a very Australian vibe about it. Looks like it could be in Fitzroy, Surry Hills or Fortitude Valley.

Photobucket
The interior is all muted tones and vintage furniture. Glasses are old jam jars, reminds me of my Nana's house.

Photobucket
I was meeting up with Dylan and Rochelle, who you may remember from a post a while back where I was excited they were finally home after 2 years in the UK. Well as soon as they were home they left again for New York for a few months. This was actually their last night in New York before going home.

Photobucket
One of the best meals I had the whole time I was away, home made beetroot ravioli with burnt butter sauce. To die for.

Photobucket
An empty lot on Bedford Ave, a great place for this random Gorilla sitting at a desk playing guitar installation.

Photobucket
You can tell this is a hipster area by the number of bicycles left at the station.

Photobucket
I met up with my friend Ebony (one of the women behind Make Believe, they make those giant flower necklaces, we know each other because we all lived in Tokyo at the same time) she has moved to NYC with her boyfriend, who is a musician.

Photobucket
Here Ole is playing in his band...the name of which I forget. They were really good though.

Photobucket
Love love love

Photobucket
Beacons Closet is where I found some vintage Miu Miu's for $18. I didn't buy them though as they weren't my size. I do wish I bought this awesome bag I found, I went back a day later and it was gone. It was the perfect replacement to my slowly falling apart fringed bag.

Photobucket
OAK is a store everyone was telling me to check out. It was pretty fabulous, you should check out the online store. I checked out the Manhattan branch too. At the Williamsburg store you need to buzz and then they open the door for you, problem is I couldn't find the damn buzzer, cue much embarrassment. I was pleased to notice they sell Australian label Evil Twin amoungst the Alexander Wang and OAK's own in house label A.OK.

Photobucket
I sure hope so.

I saw a truck on fire. Directly below the train tracks.

Photobucket

Photobucket
I bumped into Nicolette and her partner on Bedford Ave on their way to the Roaring 20's: Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island. Click the link to check out her photos of the event. They both look so chic.

Photobucket
Another blogger I got to meet up with was Queen Gilda, who I have wanted to meet for a very long time because we both share an intense love of Japan, as we both have lived there. She studied fashion at both Tokyo's Bunka and NYC's Parsons so she is definitely going places in the fashion industry. Check out her kawaii thesis collection Revasseue: for lovers and daydreamers. Oh and the girl we are sitting on the stoop with is a lovely reader from Australia, who is living in NYC at the moment, and she had hoped to bump into me around town, and well she did. So nice when people say hi to me, and so surprising when it happens overseas.

Photobucket
We went to the Williamsburg Artists and Fleas market, which is very much like the Rose Street Market back home, with a bit more vintage thrown in. But geeeeeez it was the hottest day in the history of hot days, we also went shopping in Soho, and by the end we needed to buy lots of lemonade and cheap $2.50 Old Navy thongs (flip flops) because of the blisters (well my shoes actually fell apart after surviving intact a whole summer in Aus and trip to Tokyo, New York got them in the end).

Photobucket

Photobucket
I was drawn to this bright table, and the cute dog.

Photobucket
I bought a geometric red ring from this stall holder, similar designs are available from her Etsy store Helveta Vyotlag.
