I bought a dSLR this year and did loooaaads of research, and those two come out head-to-head. I have an entry level Canon SLR (400D - an older model now) and it's great, the image quality is really good. There's pros and cons about both brands but they're both pretty similar. In the end I chose the Canon because for the same image quality it worked out a bit cheaper, and it's awesome, I use it mainly for arty type photography not really for general shots.

Another thing I found out when buying my camera (which I didn't know before) is that you can claim duty free on any item bought within 30 days of going overseas. So you can find the best deal from an Australian dealer (even from a registered online trader - I think it would have to be brand new though), so you can get an Aus warranty, and then when you go through the security part at the airport there is a counter where you bring your receipt and they credit you back all the GST. You just have to have paid for it within 30 days of your flight out of Aus. So I ended up getting my camera for a really good price. It's called the tourist refund scheme, most people don't realise you don't actually have to buy a camera at the airport to claim duty free (I didn't!)

Good luck with your camera hunt, nowadays there are really good dSLRs for under $1500 available, so I'm sure you'll find something awesome.

P.S. I saw you the other day on Elizabeth St - near Flinders st! I would have said something but I am far too shy. :Pthevintageyearhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13542688663314902736noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472985277273339152.post-75932775435242687482008-09-27T16:48:00.000+10:002008-09-27T16:48:00.000+10:00Cannon and Nikon hey. I really like that Nikon D90 you recommended Veer, it has lots of cool features (like continuous shooting which I need for fashion shows) so I am going to research that a bit and check out ebay. Thanks everyone.Fashion Hayleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05796442646636544992noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472985277273339152.post-28420901668904524112008-09-27T16:37:00.000+10:002008-09-27T16:37:00.000+10:00i think the top cameras are also nikon and canon. ...i think the top cameras are also nikon and canon. my boyfriend has the canon 30D DLSR and its awesome(too bad i dno how to work it) i just use my happy snaps camera most of the time. also maybe you can find something on ebay, they have a lot of cameras, lenses and accessories cheaper on ebay! xSHIZUKAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02980845010349192134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472985277273339152.post-74544823322346911052008-09-27T14:14:00.000+10:002008-09-27T14:14:00.000+10:00The top players in the SLR market are Nikon and Ca...The top players in the SLR market are Nikon and Canon.
If you're looking for an entry level Nikon I'd suggest the D40. Megapixels aren't really that much of an issue in reality, but if you want more then the upgrade to the D40 would be the D90. (Do not get the D80, opt for the D40 instead of the D80 as they are similar,. sans the megapixel issue, the D90 however is a big upgrade to both of them on that level, but will be more expensive).

In the Canon's the 400D is a good option. Canon's generally have more colour saturation.

I also recommend looking on eBay for one. Also check out

Flickr and search for the camera's you interested in use this tool : Camera Finder
to see photos taken with the cameras you are interested in. There may even be discussion groups for them!

Good luck on your quest. I do love cameras :)veerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02275270022419130599noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-472985277273339152.post-85685213148744711202008-09-27T12:48:00.000+10:002008-09-27T12:48:00.000+10:00I don't know much about cameras but I have a canon...I don't know much about cameras but I have a canon 350D dslr and it's pretty good. I think they have a new model out now, the 450D which is a pretty decent camera. You should hunt around on ebay, I find it's tons cheaper and you probably can get a better camera within your price range.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01223507142814121307noreply@blogger.com
